ACT Awareness, also known as Action Counters Terrorism Awareness, is an initiative developed by the UK government to provide training and guidance to individuals and organisations in recognising and reporting suspicious activities related to terrorism. It aims to empower people with the knowledge and skills to identify potential threats and take appropriate action.
The ACT Awareness program covers various aspects of counter terrorism, including identifying suspicious behaviour, understanding the nature of terrorist threats, and responding effectively in emergency situations. It educates participants about different attack methods, such as firearms and weapons attacks, bombings, and vehicle attacks, and provides guidance on how to respond and protect oneself and others.
The training includes practical advice on what to do in the event of an attack, emphasising the “Run, Hide, Tell” approach. This approach encourages individuals to first attempt to escape the danger zone, then find a secure place to hide, and finally, inform the authorities about the situation.
ACT Awareness is designed for a wide range of individuals and organisations, including businesses, schools, faith institutions, and the general public. The program offers elearning modules, workshops, and briefing sessions delivered by specially trained police officers and experts in counter terrorism.
By promoting awareness and preparedness, ACT Awareness aims to enhance public safety and contribute to the overall national security efforts. It encourages individuals to be vigilant, report suspicious activity promptly, and work together with law enforcement agencies to prevent acts of terrorism and keep communities safe.
